CALIFORNIA STATE UNIVERSITY FRESNO
With 102 years of excellence already, California State University, Fresno (Fresno State) starts its second century on the cusp of new beginnings and opportunities. Today, Fresno State is leading the way in Central California through innovation and by inspiring their students to think on higher levels and pursue their dreams.
Multiple forces at Fresno State are driving a growing demand to securely store and utilize digital assets. The advance in online education; real-time collaboration between students and faculty; traditional and social outreach to new/transfer/international/existing students, alumni, faculty and staff; and ever-growing security, privacy and regulatory requirements are chief among such forces. As a leader within California State’s higher education community, Fresno State wanted a prioritized roadmap for storage management as a key component of the University’s IT strategic plan.
Fresno State called CMI after a storage outage to discuss options for moving forward. The outage, though brief, reinforced the imperative of storage, storage management, high availability and other issues that required appropriate actions. The questions were: where to start, and how to align the different organizations within Fresno State to an actionable plan. To address both questions, CMI proposed a Storage Management Assessment and Strategy Roadmap engagement. CMI used a collaborative approach to the Assessment and Roadmap; it was comprised of three key activities:
- Assessment – Interview key stakeholders to identify and prioritize organizational requirements, review governance model, and document current state of storage architecture and design
- Analysis – Collaboratively develop a desired-state architecture that addresses requirements, standards, new technologies and existing assets and provide a gap analysis between current and desired states
- Plan – Identify and prioritize (based on need, budget and dependencies) key initiatives from gap analysis and create an actionable roadmap for storage management governance, services and infrastructure
The collective process took five weeks and provided Fresno State a disciplined and defensible plan for advancing storage management services within the University. The roadmap focused on automating and improving efficiencies, containing costs through Hierarchical Storage Management (HSM), leveraging cloud technologies for collaboration and tiering, and an enhanced governance model to maintain newly found storage alignment within the University. Looking ahead, the path for storage is clear – Go Bulldogs!
